Proper maintenance is essential to ensure the longevity and performance of small crossed roller bearings. Here are key maintenance practices:

1. Lubrication

Lubricant Selection:

Use high-quality grease or oil suitable for precision bearings (e.g., low-viscosity synthetic lubricants for high-speed applications).

Common types: Lithium-based grease, PFPE (perfluoropolyether) for extreme conditions.

Lubrication Interval:

Follow manufacturer recommendations (typically every 3–12 months, depending on operating conditions).

High-speed or heavy-load applications may require more frequent lubrication.

Method:

Apply lubricant evenly to rollers and raceways.

Avoid over-lubrication, which can cause overheating.

2. Cleaning & Contamination Control

Regular Inspection:

Check for dust, metal particles, or moisture contamination.

Clean bearings using solvent (e.g., kerosene or alcohol) and soft brushes.

Sealing:

Use shields or seals (e.g., rubber or metal seals) in dusty/wet environments.

Replace damaged seals immediately.

3. Inspection & Monitoring

Visual Checks:

Look for wear, pitting, rust, or discoloration (signs of overheating).

Performance Monitoring:

Abnormal noise or vibration may indicate misalignment or damage.

Measure rotational torque to detect increased friction.

4. Handling & Installation

Proper Tools:

Use precision presses or fitting tools to avoid impact damage.

Alignment:

Ensure shafts and housings are aligned to prevent uneven load distribution.

Preload Adjustment:

Follow manufacturer specifications to avoid excessive preload (causes heat) or looseness (reduces accuracy).

5. Storage

Keep bearings in original packaging in a dry, temperature-controlled environment.

Avoid long-term storage in humid areas to prevent corrosion.

6. Replacement

Replace bearings if:

Excessive play or stiffness is detected.

Raceways or rollers show irreversible damage.

Performance degrades despite maintenance.

Key Maintenance Tips

✔ Use the right lubricant for speed and load conditions.
✔ Prevent contamination—cleanliness is critical for precision bearings.
✔ Monitor regularly to catch early signs of wear.
✔ Follow manufacturer guidelines for installation and service life.

Proper maintenance maximizes bearing life and ensures smooth operation in robotics, CNC machines, and other high-precision applications.
